Can Guinea Pigs Eat Their Own Poop?

Guinea pigs are the type of animals that can eat anything and want to eat anything. They will not discriminate if they see something in their path which is vaguely edible.

One of these things that you may notice that they are eating is their own poop.

image wikpedia

It seems quite a strange thing for them to be doing, but is something that they really seem to enjoy.

So can guinea pigs eat their own poop, and is it okay for them to do so.

The good thing is that guinea pigs have been eating their own poop for many civilisations.

In fact it is healthy for them to do so and they shouldn’t be stopped from doing so.

What it has in it is valuable nutrients for them to eat.

So although they have just excreted the poop, often they will start eating it after they have deposited it.

This can seem disgusting for us, but its quite normal for guinea pigs.

Can Guinea Pigs Eat Mouse Food?

Guinea pigs and mice are often owned by the same owners as they are popular household pets who can be looked after in cages within an owners home.

Often they their cages are in close proximity to each other and so this leads to the question.

Can guinea pigs eat mouse food at all?

image wikipedia

Unfortunately they can’t at all and there are some good reasons for this.

1.They are from different groups. Guinea pigs are herbivores which means that they eat plants and greens only where as mice are omnivorous which means that they only eat means that they eat meat and plants. This means that they need different kinds of diets in order to keep them healthy.

2. Mouse food often contains animal fats and other types of animal product which is really bad for guinea pigs.

3. It is vital that guinea pigs have vitamin c in their diet to ensure that their bodies get the vitamin c that it doesn’t make itself.

Mouse food does not have this where as guinea pig food does contain this.

This isn’t the best reason as guinea pigs can always be given other types of food that contains vitamin c, or vitamin c pellets but it is a contributing factor.

So on the whole it is best to stick to giving mice and guinea pigs separate foods because of their different dietary requirements.

I understand that this is more expense but it is best for them both in the long run.

Can Guinea Pigs Eat Chips?

As chips have different meanings in both the UK (where I am based in) and the USA (where the majority of the readers here are based), I am going to write about two different foods.

Fortunately for me they are as bad for piggies as each other.

Chips (UK, Australia, Ireland) are slices of potato that are fried, otherwise known as fries in the USA, these are definitely not good for guinea pigs at all as they cannot eat any potato foods whatsoever not to mention they are cooked. They are definitely a food to steer clear of as far as guinea pigs are concerned.

Chips (USA) are what we would call crisps or tortilla chips. They are still not good for guinea pigs at all, except for the fact they aren’t as heavily cooked as Chips or Fries. They are loaded with salt which really isn’t good for them at all, however if they do nibble on one it wont hurt them, they just can’t have too many of them.

So when you see the word chips, this is definitely something to avoid giving to guinea pigs.

Cheese puffs are a great snack for humans to eat on to fill a hunger gap. Although they don’t do us much good nutritionally, they have great flavour in them, even if it is artificial. They are made by all kinds of different brands in different shapes and sizes and vary in strength of flavour as well.

So can guinea pigs eat cheese puffs at all, and if they can how much of them can be eaten.

Its fine for them to have a nibble on them, and it wont do them much harm. But they really shouldn’t have much more than that. Although they don’t do us much good nutritionally, they have great flavour in them, even if it is artificial.

its fine for them to have a nibble on them, and it wont do them much harm. But they really shouldn’t have much more than that, they probably wont want to have that much more that anyway.

They don’t hold any nutritional value for them at all, so they are not something that should be fed to them intentionally.

There are much better foods for them to eat and for them to enjoy such as fresh veggies and hay.

Onions are found around the world and cultivated as a foodstuff.

They are used in a huge number of different culinary situations and are a staple food for many around the world.

They are an extremely versatile food and are pungent when they are chopped up and are well known for irritating eyes when done so.

So can guinea pigs eat onions at all?

In my mind, being a guinea pig owner I would guess that they are not so good for them to eat.

But its good to find out more about what they contain and make a conclusion from the information that we find out them.

As you can see, onions contain a little phosphorus, a hint of calcium, quite a lot of acidic content and sugar. But they also contains a lot of water which is not good for guinea pigs.

Due to the amount of acidic content and water that onions contain, they will unfortunately make guinea pigs sick if they eat them.

They just can’t handle the nutrients that they contain. Too much water will bloat a guinea pig and too much acidic content will cause their stomach to become upset.

This means that not only raw onions, but it would be worth avoiding other variations such as red onions, spring onions, pickled onions and green onions as they have similar nutrients.

They also cannot eat cooked onions as cooked foods are not good for guinea pigs.

Just a final note. Although I have never tried feeding onions to my piggies, I don’t think they would attempt to eat them due to their pungent smell, they always give food a good sniff to check it out and my piggies are quite picky about what they eat.

In my experience, guinea pigs are quite smart about knowing what they like and don’t like, which is pretty good for us owners if we decide to feed them food which isn’t good.

As you can see mustard cress contains huge amount of water, quite a bit of phosphorus and calcium, a lot of acidic content, a little sugar and a hint of fat.

What does this mean?

This means that mustard cress is not a good food for guinea pigs to eat.

Because of its water and acidic content, it should be avoided  as a food.

Appearances can definitely be deceiving when it comes to mustard cress as it very much looks like it should be a food that is fine for them to eat.

But its content is too much for piggies and makes it a food that should be avoided.

If they eat one or two flowers, then they will be okay. But try and keep them from eating a lot.

What to do if they eat a lot of mustard cress?

If they happen to eat a lot of it, make sure you have plenty of water and hay for them to eat, to settle their stomach.

Also monitor their behavior and check that they are okay.

If you notice any sickness, then take them to a veterinary surgeon who will be able to prescribe good suitable medication for them.
